This year was Kylie's second time performing with the competition team at Kane Dance Academy. It has been a great experience so far and she loves being on stage. I love the confidence that she has developed and will always love to watch her dance. Last year, being in the youngest age group on the team, she only performed in one large production number. This year, she was part of the large production number, a small lyrical group, and a small hip hop group. It was great for her to be a part of multiple dances and made our time at competitions much more worth while. :)
Getting ready back stage with Miss Kristy - the studio owner.
Can you tell that she did not want me to take a picture or what?
Getting all warmed up and stretched out
Backstage with the girls
Always before every competition and recital, the studio has circle time.
They all get in a circle and hold hands and wish each other good luck before a performance.
This is one of my favorite pictures from the season.
Lyrical - Paradise (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory song)
Hip Hop - Take Me Back
Production - Sunday by the Sea
Kylie had a little highlight hear and loved it. She was acting like she was
terrified of the crab and screamed out at the top of her lungs, and then
passed out into the arms of the other dancers waiting below.
At the end of the season, they brought home some great awards. Kylie's hip hop group even had the highest small group score at one of the competitions. Most of the awards are those where you are competing for your personal best, not necessarily against other studios. Platinum is highest, High Gold, Gold, and then Silver. Our routines either earned a Platinum or High Gold and so they always went home very happy.
Just one quick story about this season that I want to make sure I write down and remember. In the production Sunday by the Sea number, the girls are obviously wearing bathing suits. You can see in the pictures that not all of them are one piece or modest. When the girls were being fitted for the costumes, Miss Kristy started to talk to Kylie about what her bathing suit would look like and what color she would be wearing. Kylie quickly realized that she was going to be given a two piece bathing suit with her stomach exposed and she knew right away that this was not going to be modest. Kylie is extremely shy, rarely speaks up for herself, especially when it comes to adults and teachers. I have taught her to be respectful and appreciate that she is. But sometimes, you need to speak up. I was so proud of her when she was sharing this story with me that she did speak up when it mattered the most. She mentioned to Miss Kristy that she was not allowed to wear a two piece bathing suit and that she needed to dress modestly. To which Miss Kristy replied, "Well what do you wear at the beach then?" Kylie said, "A one piece bathing suit. I don't show my stomach." So awesome! Miss Kristy listened and at the next costume fitting, Kylie's suit had been altered to be a one piece. I was so impressed with Kylie and am so happy that she has high standards for herself, even when most of her friends and girls her age at the studio may be wearing something else.
